Finding a partner with a child – survey shows good prospects for single parents

Survey on online dating with children: One-third of fathers and mothers feel disadvantaged when looking for a partner online—but mostly without reason

Hamburg, May 25, 2021. Many single parents are looking for love, as shown by current member data from the online dating agency LemonSwan. Over 27 percent of the more than 300,000 members have children, and 15 percent of them live in the same household. Interestingly, many singles with children find the search for Mrs. or Mr. Right not so easy:

As a recent survey by online dating agency LemonSwan shows, one-third of single parents surveyed believe their chances are worse if they indicate in their profile that they have children. However, their concerns are unfounded—the majority of singles looking for a serious relationship are open-minded when it comes to children.

Even though single parents on LemonSwan feel they have fewer chances of finding a partner if they mention their children in their profile, the majority (96 percent) stick to the truth and do not hide their children. On the other hand, one in five singles (21 percent) without children has experienced someone providing false information about children. This behavior seems unfounded: only seven percent of single parents on LemonSwan have experienced contact being broken off when their children were mentioned. One-fifth stated that their counterpart had no objection to children and that they did not play a major role in getting to know each other.

When is the right time to introduce the children?

Gut feeling determines when parents introduce their children to their

potential partner—at least that's what 29 percent of respondents on LemonSwan say. However, most single parents (30 percent) only want to tell their children about Mr. or Mrs. Right when things get serious or a relationship has developed through online dating. One-fifth (20 percent) are open about their search for a partner from the outset and involve their children directly. However, almost as many single parents (22 percent) leave their children out of the picture when it comes to love. Of course, this depends on the age of the children: while more than half (55 percent) of those surveyed say that their children are old enough to talk openly with them about finding a partner, 27 percent say that their children are too young to understand and therefore are not yet involved in this topic.

Children and new partners – chemistry is crucial

More than one in four (28 percent) of respondents have already had the experience that

introducing their new partner to their children went badly

and ultimately ended in arguments and rejection on the part of the children. A full 15 percent of single parents on LemonSwan even say that they have already ended relationships because of their children. However, most believe that they can trust their instincts: one-third (33 percent) say that no relationship has failed because of their children, because they know exactly who is right for them as a family.
